The Department of Biological Sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology invites applications for the position of Kummer Endowed Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences to begin Fall Semester, 2024. We seek leadership with a vision for interdisciplinary engagement of the life sciences with other disciplines, industries, and public agencies. Preference will be given to candidates either with an applied research focus that promotes the Kummer vision of academic-industry partnerships and economic development or applies basic life science to address human health needs.
This search is taking place during an exciting time of investment and growth on our campus. The University is putting forward new cross-disciplinary doctoral and undergraduate programs in life sciences and engineering. To support these initiatives, plans are underway for the renovation and expansion of integrated life sciences research facilities. The Biological Sciences Department is advancing new research initiatives through the addition of new faculty and a proposed doctoral program.
The Kummer Institute for Student Success, Research and Economic Development was established in October 2020 through a gift of $300 million from June and Fred Kummer, longtime benefactors of Missouri University of Science and Technology. The Institute will transform Missouri S&T and the south-central Missouri region by cultivating leadership and technological innovation; nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset; fostering expansion of academic-industry partnerships to directly address emerging needs of industry; and creating economic growth for the region.
To achieve these goals we desire a candidate who will provide leadership and vision in the Department of Biological Sciences. A Kummer Endowed Chair will have access to generous endowment funds to further a range of activities to promote the mission of the Kummer Institute and advance their vision for the Department. As Department Chair, the successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in the following areas:
The Department of Biological Sciences supports undergraduate programs in biological science and environmental science, an undergraduate certificate in bioinnovation, a master's degree program, and is launching a new Ph.D. program. Missouri University of Science and Technology is a STEM-focused research university and part of the four-campus University of Missouri System. Located about 100 miles west of St. Louis in the affordable community of Rolla, Missouri S&T is an accessible, safe, and friendly campus surrounded by Ozarks scenery.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biological sciences or a related life science field and rank of full professor or be qualified for tenure and appointment to the rank of full professor. They should have an outstanding record of scholarship evidenced by a strong record of publication and related funding as well as a clear and demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of students.
